Nikon 8397 ACULON Laser Rangefinder Review

This is another Nikon’s more affordable rangefinders. It may be an entry-level rangefinder but according to numerous reviews, the performance of this unit is comparable to some high-end models. It’s something worth trying if you are on the lookout for a cheap laser rangefinder.

There are several features of this unit that impressed me.  The optical quality of the lens is one, but because it comes from Nikon, that’s not really a surprise.

Nikon 8397 ACULON AL11 Laser Rangefinder Review

Nikon 8397 ACULON AL11 Laser Rangefinder

The compact and lightweight frame of the rangefinder is another selling point. This rangefinder isn’t waterproof, though, and lacks some advanced features found in more expensive units.

Distant Priority mode

This is a feature that makes the Nikon Aculon quite good in our book despite being an entry-level rangefinder. With this function, it can display the distance to the furthest target when you are looking at a group of subjects. This is particularly important when the subject you are looking at is obscured by obstacles like grass.

Superior Optics

We’ve mentioned how Nikon is trusted when it comes to optics. This one is no exception, with a 6x magnification and 20mm objective lens.

It is also engineered using the brand’s multilayer coated optics, providing a higher light transmittance. This, in turn, reduces the loss of light caused by reflection which results in a more natural view.

User friendly design

One of the things that make this a truly user-friendly rangefinder is its two-button set-up. With just two buttons,  the unit isn’t that confusing to its users especially those who haven’t operated a rangefinder before.

To power on the rangefinder, simply press the button that is closer to you. Then to toggle between meters and yards, you press the other button.

To get the distance of the target, hit the power button, look through the monocular, then hit the power button again.

Compact and Lightweight

If you’re looking for a rangefinder that you can easily slip into the pocket of your trousers or jacket, then this is the unit for you. It weighs just 4.4 ounces sans the battery.

It is compact with dimensions of 3.6 inches by 2.9 inches by 1.5 inches. It is one of the most compact rangefinders in Nikon’s range. It is even smaller than most smartphones today.

Long battery life. This rangefinder uses the standard CR2 battery. But what makes this different from other entry-level rangefinders is how economical it is in the use of power.

According to most reviews, the Nikon Aculon can last for several months. There are also a couple of batteries included in the package. The device also has an auto shut off feature which can conserve battery life.
